All of us want to live in the zone. If you watch any sports at all you hear that phrase all the time. I’m sure you heard, “Boy, Michael Jordan was really in the zone tonight!” Then they interview Michael and he might say the same things. “Michael, 45 points, game winning shot, tell me about it.” I saw an interview like this with him. He smiled this little smile and said, “I was just in the zone. When you get in the zone things like that happen.”
Well, you can be in the zone, not just in basketball or sports, but in any area of your life. It is the ultimate peak performance. You can be in the zone parenting. You can be in the zone for your work and career. You can be in the zone in your most important relationship. You can be in the zone as far as your health goes. That’s a lot of what we’re about in The Healing Codes. So how do you get in the zone?
Well, the first thing is you have to do whatever you’re doing from the heart. Arizona State University did a number of studies where they focused primarily on sports. They focused on archery and shooting bows and arrows. They focused on golf. They focused on several sports. What they found is that people who were doing that sport from the heart, which involves the right brain and if you have questions about that, come to our Thursday call, Living from the Heart, where we talk about that stuff a lot, but people who were coming from the heart shooting bow and arrow or playing golf or doing other kinds of sports, did it significantly better than people who were doing it from their head.
What they also found is that athletes and people who were doing those sports, if they would activate their heart while they were thinking about doing that sport, they weren’t even doing it, they were sitting on the couch at home, if they would activate their heart while thinking about doing it they would go out and do it better than they had done it before and the thinking about it from a heart place was just as effective and many times more so than practicing. That blows you mind, but it’s true.
There was a doctor on The Secret with Dr. Ben who had coached Olympic athletes and talked about that same thing, how they would test Olympic athletes who were thinking about their event from the heart and they saw that all the same muscles fired in the same order as if they were actually running or swimming or whatever their event was. And, when they did that, the next time they would go out, they would have gotten better.
So the key to peak performance, not only from a ancient manuscript perspective, but also from a scientific and medical and physiological perspective is you’ve got to do whatever you’re doing from the heart.
Let me give you some real quick guidelines on this. Get a piece of paper out whenever you have a chance to do this. Think about the thing that you would like to do “in the zone”, have a peak performance in, rather than the way you’ve been doing it. Point number one is whatever that is you have to do it in truth and love. So if you’re doing it completely for selfish reasons, don’t do it. Find something else to do in the zone. Whatever you’re going to do it has to be in truth and love. Spend just a couple of minutes saying, “Am I doing this in truth and love or is it for some bad motivation or reason or something like that?” If you can do that from a place of truth and love, you go on to the next thing.
